Orton-Gillingham Certification

Because Orton-Gillingham is a professional, evidence-based approach (not just a curriculum), training is quite structured and emphasizes both knowledge of language and instructional technique.

To earn my Orton-Gillingham Certification I completed:

  • 30–60 hours of classroom instruction

    • Phonemic awareness and phonics

    • Spelling and morphology

    • Multisensory lesson design

    • Diagnostic assessment techniques

  • Practicum

    • 100 1:1 Orton-Gillingham lessons

    • 40–60 minute lessons, usually 2x per week.

    • 10 full lessons observed by a certified Fellow/supervisor.

    • Thorough documentation including lesson logs, student profiles, and reflections.

My coursework, practicum hours and observations, and supervisor evaluations were then reviewed by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, and I was officially awarded my certification in November 2025.
